One of the best – and priciest – places to bed down in Phuket is Trisara, an ultra-luxe hotel set on its own cape on the north-west side of the island. Its 39 secluded villas are as pretty as they are spacious, designed in a modern Thai style and each kitted out with ocean-view terraces, infinity pool and butlers on call. Trisara’s remote location means it’s far away from any tourist sights, but there’s little reason to leave: there’s a gorgeous sunbed-lined pool for lounging and laps, as well as a powdery white beach only guests have access to. The Jara spa combines sensational ocean views with soothing Thai massage treatments, and there are three excellent restaurants for palm-shaded beachfront dining, including the Michelin-starred Pru and famous barbecues at Seafood by Trisara.

With constant news of a climate in peril, some of the world’s most luxurious properties are joining the green revolution with a variety of inventive techniques. Many hotels are making an eco-friendly start with simple methods such as switching plastic straws for the paper variety and providing guests with drinking water from reusable glass bottles, however, we’ve found a few resorts around the globe that don’t think that’s nearly enough.
From anti-poaching initiatives in South Africa and coral-reef restoration projects in Mexico, to solar panels in the Maldives that help offset the equivalent of hundreds of flights per year, these 10 resorts are going above and beyond in an effort to make every day Earth Day.

“I must mention my stay at the fabulous Trisara (www.trisara.thvps.com), one of the most luxurious laid-back resorts on the island. “I really believe that luxury is the outcome of an experience and not a product,” says the Australian managing director and general manager of the property, Anthony Lark. This describes Trisara in a nutshell. It exceeds your expectations at every corner. Trisara is on the northwest of the island on a private beach overlooking the Andaman Sea. All the 39 villas have private pools and most of them have sea views. Just in case you fall in love with the property, they also have private residences you can buy! The hotel has the only Michelin-starred restaurant, PRU, on the island. PRU is open to non-residents too and is certainly worth the drive even if you’re not staying at Trisara. The main restaurant has a deck with an international menu, seafood dinners on Fridays and a magnificent Sunday brunch with French champagne.”

The road to paradise is indeed windy, but fringed with coconut trees and seafoam at the shores of the Andaman, you just know you’re going somewhere exquisite as the chauffeur-driven Volvo XC50 cruises up the tropical hills of northwest Phuket towards this private luxury villa resort. It’s only 15 minutes away from the new Phuket International Airport, but it feels a world away. I arrive at the welcome pavilion, perched on a level overlooking the beachfront, where on this breezy day, rows of coconut trees sway their big hellos as the waves of the Andaman Sea leap up high, in some kind of symphonic show.

A luxury eco resort in Phuket is setting the benchmark for sustainability.
There’s nowhere quite like Trisara, an exclusive boutique hotel set on Phuket’s less-visited north-west coast. Jaw-dropping ocean views roll out from every villa over a sparkling half-moon bay, begging to be snorkelled. With a name that lives up to its translation, “the garden in the third heaven,”it comes as little surprise that the well-heeled journey here from all over the world.
Privacy is the unspoken rule. Aside from the peaked red rooftops which intermittently pierce the jungle, you feel completeley alone. Elegant and understated, each villa has its own infinity pool screened by lush hedges of vivid birds of paradise flowers. It makes the outdoor shower an irresistable, gloriously secluded, morning ritual. (Side note – Trisara has been listed as one of the world’s best places for a skinny dip).

This is where the glamour comes in. Renowned for its authentic food, Trisara is the grande dame of Phuket’s five-star beachside boutique scene. In sanskrit, it means “the garden in the third heaven” and, since its opening in 2004, it’s grown to 60 spacious pool villas and two-six bedroom private residences, all with breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea and its hibiscus-hued sunsets.
It’s utterly tranquil, located in the upmarket north eastern part of the island, well away from the pumping heart of sleazy Patong, and a convenient 15 minutes’ drive from the airport.

“In fact, everything at Trisara translates into sustainability. There is the anti-plastic policy in the villas (sleek glass water bottles line the fridges and bathroom toiletries are kept in elegant wooden bottles).
There is the upcycled Thai antique wood furniture in the rooms and the grey-water recycling systems which keep the grounds lush and green. But you know you must be doing something right when you have two large green-backed sea turtles returning to your beach after a decade, to lay their eggs.”

Best for the boho crowd: Trisara
Trisara is one of those hotels spoken about in hushed tones by those in the know, keen to keep this island treasure to themselves. There are hammocks to laze in, yachts to sail in, and a heavenly-scented spa. At Pru, home to Phuket’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, feast on river prawns with XO sauce and wood-fired duck; the laughter-filled Sunday brunch is the best on the island. Then there are the villas: vast, creamy affairs with private pools so generously spaced apart you can happily swim naked.

It’s testament to the skill of the resort’s design team that each of the 48 villas and residences at Trisara, on the Thai island of Phuket, combines unspoiled views of the Andaman Sea with a lush garden setting that offers utter privacy. Fringed by more than a mile of private beach, an artfully managed canopy of old-growth trees and plants surrounds the accommodations, as well as two restaurants, a spa, gym, tennis courts, and Muay Thai boxing ring.

The sun setting over the lone, craggy little rock of an island that lies in front of you in the Andaman Sea looks like a scene out of a classical Japanese painting. As you step onto your teak deck at the Trisara Resort, it doesn’t take but a moment to realize why this Thai property’s name in Sanskrit means the “Garden in the Third Heaven.”

After a massive revamp last year, Trisara resort in Phuket relaunched as a Pool villas-only resort. The extensive renovation saw the refurbishment of its pool villas and addition of new villa categories, a spa, an innovative farm-to-table restaurant, and the introduction of unique personalised services. While the right thing to do is to just chill by your private pool and enjoy the serenity of the surroundings, provided by the forest canopy of the resort’s ‘managed jungle’ setting, there are good reasons to step away from your villa.

At 12 years old, Trisara was certainly not dated; its rooms were neither cramped nor run down. But that didn’t stop the exclusive Thai resort from embarking on an extensive renovation last year. Completed in December, the makeover was not a reinvention but rather an expansion and refinement that renovated the property’s 15 opulent villas with Thai silk furnishings, teak walls, and private decks and pools. Two restaurants elevate the island cuisine, while the new Jara Spa puts wellness front and center. Unchanged are the vistas—stretching beyond one of Phuket’s only private-access beaches and over the sparkling Andaman Sea—seen from virtually every gleaming corner of the resort ($720–$3,430).

I was in the north, which was as green as the Lake District but with slightly hotter weather. I stayed in a resort called Trisara, which turned out to be the classiest, most attractive and tasteful resort I have ever visited. The owners are a Thai family who have made their money in banking, so it’s not partof a large hotel group. Privately owned places usually manage to retain their personality and character, I find.
